The coastal village of Kippford, with its yacht marina and views over the Urr Estuary, is a great place to unwind and enjoy a truly relaxing break.
The area boasts beautiful beaches and forests and there is also a 5th-century hill fort nearby. It's possible to see the English Lake District from the village and, at low tide, to cross the sands to Rough Island.
Aside from the coastal and beach walks, the Dalbeattie Forest is just two miles away with a number of forest trails. Included in these is the world-renowned 7Stanes Mountain Bike Trail for adrenalin seekers (NB: we offer secure bike storage at Kendoon). For those who like a more relaxed ride, the area is also well-known for its quiet country roads and tracks, giving cyclists the opportunity to explore the area and enjoy the countryside at a leisurely pace. Dalbeattie Forest also offers tranquil walking trails.
From migrating geese in their thousands, seabirds, waders, birds of prey and the Red Kite Trail - if you are into ornithological pursuits, this is the place for you. There are several reserves nearby including RSPB Mersehead and Caerlaverock while the Red Kite feeding station at Laurieston is also well worth a visit.
In spring, Mersehead’s meadows fill with lapwings and skylarks, butterflies and wild flowers. You may also see a roe deer or two. In the autumn, thousands of barnacle and pink-footed geese start to arrive for the winter, creating a not-to-be-missed spectacle.
Dalbeattie offers a good range of shops, places to eat, a petrol filling station and convenience stores. The town is also the birthplace of William McMaster Murdock, the First Officer on the doomed Titanic and a memorial to him can be seen at the imposing granite Town Hall.
Dumfries, some 30 minutes' drive from Kippford, has a number of visitor attractions including Burns House, Mabie Farm Park, an Aviation Museum based at a wartime RAF airfield and the Camera Obscura.
And, if you’re a keen golfer, there’s a scenic 9-hole course at Kippford which is suitable for golfers of all abilities (day visitors welcome), as well as 30 local courses and links including another 9-holer at Dalbeattie and at Preston Farm, Southerness and 18-hole courses at Colvend, Southerness and Castle Douglas.
